What's actually different between the RIVER 3 MAX and RIVER 3 PLUS?
Mainly battery capacity and price. The MAX holds 572Wh for $319; the PLUS holds 286Wh for $259 but has a higher 200W solar input against the MAX's 110W. Weight, output, surge, cycle life, and warranty are identical on both.
Is the RIVER 3 MAX better than the RIVER 2 Pro, or just newer?
Better for most people buying in this class, but not across the board. The MAX is lighter at 10.4 lb, carries a ≤10ms switchover rating against ≤30ms, and costs less. The Pro holds 768Wh to the MAX's 572Wh, runs 800W to its 600W, and takes 220W of solar to its 110W. The Pro wins on things you use occasionally; the MAX wins on things you handle every time.
Is the RIVER 3 MAX's expandability worth paying for?
Not as a plan. It starts at 572Wh, below the Pro's fixed 768Wh, so the first stretch of expansion only catches up to the Pro. Every watt-hour you add also sits behind the same 110W solar input, which already needs about 5.2 hours of ideal sun to refill the base pack. Buy it for what it is out of the box.
Why does the RIVER 3 MAX hold less than the DELTA 3 1000 Air if it's named MAX?
MAX refers to its position at the top of EcoFlow's RIVER 3 sub-line, not to the DELTA 3 1000 Air sitting in a different product line entirely. At 572Wh against the DELTA 3 1000 Air's 960Wh, it holds 388Wh less despite costing about the same.
Is the RIVER 3 MAX's expansion path worth the smaller starting capacity?
Only if you actually plan to buy an expansion battery. Out of the box, the RIVER 3 MAX starts 388Wh behind the DELTA 3 1000 Air, so the first expansion purchase brings it back to roughly even rather than ahead. It's a real advantage for buyers who expect their needs to grow, not a free upgrade.
