If you'll use it indoors, in a car, or under cover, the unsealed Explorer 1000 Plus is fine and saves weight while adding expandability.
Which is the better long-term buy?
For most, the Explorer 1000 Plus, because of expandability — it grows to about 5,000Wh as your needs do, and it's the proven all-rounder with a real six-month owner track record. The 1500 Ultra is the better fixed unit: more base capacity, lower cost-to-own, and rugged IP65, but capped at 1,536Wh. If you're certain about your capacity needs and want toughness, the Ultra; if you want flexibility, the 1000 Plus.
